In the area of Bijambare, peatland research was carried out as part of the project “Devellopment of guidelines/programs for the restoration of peatlands in the Protecded Landscape of Bijambare”. The results of the project will be presented in the following period.
Peatlands are very valuable and rare ecosystems. Their value is reflected, among other things, in the fact that they store more carbon than forest ecosystems, so they are very important ecosystems in conditions of climate change. Peatlands are very rare in mountainous areas.
The conducted research revealed that the peatlands in Bijambare are up to 10,000 years old. It takes 100 years for one centimetre of peat soil to form. For all the reasons mentioned, it is important to keep the peatlands vital and functional so that the next generations can feel the benefits of the ecosystem services of the peatlands.
