Representatives of the Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas attended the event “Clean Miljacka River and Sustainable Urban Water Management” on 8 April at the Europe House Sarajevo, organized to mark World Water Day 2026.
The Clean Miljacka River Project represents an important step forward in the protection of natural resources and the creation of a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive environment for citizens. Through the joint efforts of local, city, and cantonal authorities, a strong foundation is being established for the long-term and sustainable management of the Miljacka River river corridor.
The event brought together representatives of institutions, experts, and other relevant stakeholders to present the activities and results achieved by the project’s expert working group. Participants were also introduced to the outcomes and innovative solutions developed through the URWAN Project in the Sarajevo, as well as experiences and approaches in the field of sustainable urban water management.
A Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at strengthening coordination and joint action in the implementation of the Clean Miljacka River Project was also presented. The memorandum was signed by the municipalities of the City of Sarajevo, the City of Sarajevo, and the Sarajevo Canton, committing all parties to enhanced cooperation in project preparation, funding applications, and the continued work of the expert working group. The project will additionally be supported by the Sava River Basin Agency and the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
As part of the programme, a panel discussion entitled “CleanMiljacka River and Sustainable Urban WaterManagement” was held, bringing together experts in water management, municipal services, and environmental protection to discuss challenges and potential solutions for the City of Sarajevo.
The final part of the programme included a field visit to Bentbaša, where participants had the opportunity to see how ideas developed through community engagement are being translated into concrete spatial and urban development concepts.
