Bijambare

When you climb from the valley of the river Ljubina on the main road Sarajevo - Tuzla for about 150 meters above sea level, the traveler finds himself at the beginning of the vast Nišićka plateau. To the west and north are rolling mountain meadows, and to the south and east are large and dense forests. Rocky limestone ridges also appear in several places, which give the whole landscape the characteristics of a unique natural complex.

There are 8 caves in the area of Bijambare

Traces of human presence were found in the upper cave - tools and weapons from the Stone Age, which are in the National Museum in Sarajevo. Out of these caves, only the middle Bijambare cave is arranged, lit and open to visitors. It is about 500 meters long and consists of four halls, which can be seen moving along the paved path. The fourth hall is especially interesting, which was called the "concert hall" due to its exceptional acoustics. The middle Bijambare Cave is known for its rare and unusual jewelry - stalactites, stalagmites, cave draperies or curtains, as well as cave baths or bigren created by pulling water over deposits of calcium carbonate and clay. It is interesting to note that stalactite takes 100 to 150 years to grow by 1 centimeter.

Natural and cultural heritage

The protected landscape “Bijambare” is located on the northeastern slopes of the Sarajevo Canton, near the Nišićka plateau. To the west and north there are undulating mountain meadows, and to the south and east there are large and dense forests, mostly coniferous. Rocky limestone ridges also appear in several places, which give the whole landscape the characteristics of a unique natural complex.

The area is characterized by great biodiversity. 133 different living communities have been identified, and their structure consists of over 800 species of higher plants. It is especially rich in species that belong to the group of medicinal flora, medicinal, edible, aromatic and vitamin plants. Also, various honey plants are represented. Numerous representatives of the fauna are also present – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mollusks, insects and other groups of animals at a lower stage of development.

Since it is located in the karst region, this area is rich in karst phenomena, such as karst abysses, sinkholes and caves.

The Bijambare area offers visitors a number of facilities. It is equipped with mountain furniture for staying in nature, relaxation and rest for the whole family, and a playground for children (Wooden City). It has bicycle, educational and forest trails. A big attraction is the tourist train that runs from the entrance to the center of the nucleus.

In the area of Bijambare, an Educational-Information Center has been built, which is an unavoidable tourist point where information services are provided to visitors and various types of education and presentations are organized.

The protected landscape covers an area of 497 hectares and consists of three protection zones. The first protection zone has 137, the second 308, and the third 52 hectares.
