Organized by the Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas, a presentation of the Action Plan for the prevention, suppression, and control of forest fires in the Nature Monument “Skakavac” took place on 20 June at the Municipality of Stari Grad’s hall. This plan was developed as part of the “Sustainability of Protected Areas in BiH” (SPA) project, implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP) and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The event commenced with an opening address by Asad Jelešković, Director of the Institution, who underscored the plan’s significance. Dr. Mersudin Avdibegović, a professor at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo, then detailed the plan’s objectives and priorities to the attendees.

The presentation highlighted the rationale behind the plan’s development and identified three key institutions crucial for cooperation in forest fire prevention, suppression, and control within the management of this area. Emphasis was placed on the importance of intersectoral collaboration, coordination, communication, and public awareness campaigns to safeguard forests from fire risks. The analysis encompassed technical and infrastructural prerequisites, such as the early warning system, as well as personnel capacity building through education and training. Participants engaged in discussions on the unique characteristics of the Skakavac area and formulated effective strategies for its fire protection.
