Skakavac Nature Monument has become the first destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina to receive the international Green Destinations Bronze Award. This prestigious recognition was granted under the Green Destinations programme, run by an international organisation that assesses and supports destinations in improving sustainable management, protecting natural and cultural heritage, and developing responsible and sustainable tourism.
The Bronze Award recognises the continuous efforts of the Sarajevo Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas to protect and preserve the natural values of Skakavac Nature Monument, improve the management of the protected area, and develop a sustainable tourism offering. The significance of this achievement is further highlighted by the fact that Skakavac is currently the only destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina to hold Green Destinations Award status, placing Sarajevo Canton and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international map of sustainable tourism destinations.
The award process involved a comprehensive assessment of various aspects of destination sustainability, including governance, nature conservation, sustainable tourism, local community engagement, and responsible visitor management. This recognition is the result of the collective efforts of the Institution’s staff, particularly its expert and ranger services, who work daily to protect natural heritage, conduct monitoring activities, manage visitor flows, and improve visitor facilities and services within Skakavac Nature Monument.
Receiving the Bronze Award does not mark the end of the process, but rather an important first step. In line with the recommendations of the Green Destinations audit, the Institution will continue working to improve sustainability and management quality, with the aim of achieving higher levels of recognition -Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
For us, nature conservation and tourism development are not conflicting objectives. On the contrary, our goal is to develop a tourism offering that enables visitors to discover and experience the natural beauty and heritage of Skakavac while ensuring that its most valuable natural features are preserved for future generations.
