Each year, the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition gathers good practice stories from destinations worldwide, sharing them as inspiring examples for others, from tourism employees to travelers. By sharing their stories, destination managers are acknowledged and recognized for the solutions they have implemented in response to the sustainable development challenges they face. Given the demanding times the tourism sector has faced in recent years, the resilience and hard work of these destinations toward becoming more responsible should be celebrated.
The 2024 selection includes the Nature Monument “Skakavac,” with its good practice story “Hiking, Hikers, and Local Tradition.”
Here is a brief description of the good practice story:
“The hiking tradition in Sarajevo and the surrounding mountains dates back over a century. Its beginnings as an organized activity trace back to the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, bringing with it a new culture and tradition previously unfamiliar to the local population. A 1913 guide mentions that the trail to Skakavac was marked.”
This year, over 170 applications from 45 countries were submitted, with 129 good practice stories received. The entries were reviewed by the Green Destinations Top 100 committee, comprising experts from various countries and Green Destination partners, coordinated by Green Destinations. The Top 100 committee emphasizes that selection in the Top 100 list does not mean that a destination is entirely sustainable, but rather that the destination has been pre-selected based on a minimum level of compliance with the core criteria of the Green Destinations standard, and its inclusion is also based on the evaluation of their good practice story.
The competition is held under the auspices of the Top 100 partnership, with special contributions from Green Destinations, QualityCoast, ITB Berlin, the Asian Ecotourism Network, Ecotourism Australia, DEL Turismo, Slovenia Green, the Global Ecotourism Network, and the Future of Tourism Coalition.
