On 4 April, a round table devoted to the protection of bats in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in the premises of “Preporod” in Sarajevo, which was attended by representatives of the Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas. This event was implemented within the project “Monitoring and Protection of Bats in Bosnia and Herzegovina” which is jointly implemented by the Association of Citizens  “Fojničani”, the Center for Karst and Speleology as well as the Sports and Scientific Research Club “Atom” from Zavidovići.

The aim of the round table was to gather all relevant actors interested in the protection of bats and their habitats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to create a platform for the exchange of information, ideas and experiences and the identification of concrete steps that will contribute to the preservation of these important animals. At this event, expert presentations and presentations on the current state of the bat population and their habitats in Bosnia and Herzegovina could be heard. A discussion was also opened on possible measures for the protection and conservation of bats, including legislative initiatives, public education and cooperation with local communities.

It is an impressive fact that only the Škocjan Caves have a larger number of recorded bats in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. According to the latest monitoring, 24 species of bats were recorded in the area of the “Bijambare” Protected Landscape.
